The silence in the kitchen was deafening. Sarah stared at the coffee pot, unable to bring herself to make a cup. The news had arrived like a punch to the gut. Someone else’s history, now interwoven with hers.

She ran a hand across her face, feeling the fatigue etched into her features. She felt a strange tingling sensation in her limbs, as if they were slowly shutting down. Her apartment was too small, the walls felt constricting.

She walked to the window, staring at the cityscape. The buildings seemed distant, unreal. She wanted to shout, to break something, to simply make a sound. Instead, she stood frozen, a statue of silent distress.
